Milan Šlachta and his 18 years old son Petr both work at the Dukla coal mine in Havířov. Essential to national economy, their hard and responsible job is held in high regard by the Czechoslovak Communist regime but loaded with uncertainties for miners and their families, including Milan's wife Marie and Petr's pregnant girlfriend Jana. The personal and family drama unfolds against the backdrop of events leading up to the most tragic mining disaster in the post-war Czech history which happened at the Dukla mine on 7 July 1961, leaving 108 miners dead as a result of criminal negligence of duties by their supervisors.
